Rebecca was the youngest of 13 children, raised in a German Baptist Brethren family. She married Henry Clabaugh in Ohio and birthed their four children in Ohio: Joseph, Isaiah James, John David, and Lovina Minerva (m. Laverty).

When her children were young, the family moved from Hancock County, Ohio, to Warren County, Illinois. Her husband died in Illinois, when she was 49 years old, and she moved on to Nebraska and then to Missouri. She was a wife for about 22 years, and a widow for another 22 years.
