Ward is the son of Herbert Burton Ham and Alice Elma Robinson, the fourth-born of their five children. He was raised in South Dakota.

He married Emma on May 18, 1941, in Butte Co., South Dakota.

Ward entered the US Marine Corps in May 1944 and served his country during WWII. He acheived the rank of Sgt.

Survived by his wife and three children.
