Rachel Tsitouris Biggers, 77, of Matthews, passed away peacefully Monday morning, January 19, 2009 at the Haven in the Village at Carolina Place having suffered with Alzheimer's disease.
She was born May 26, 1931, to Verla Rowell Tsitouris and Philip Tsitouris of Monroe.
She married John Harrison Biggers of Indian Trail on September 29, 1951. They lived in Matthews, where she helped him run the family business, Biggers Furniture Co. She lovingly cared for him during his life, illness, and passing in 1987.
Rachel was preceded in death by her husband of 36 years, John "Harry" Biggers.
She is survived by her loving children Kathryn Biggers Kokenes and husband Dennis, John Harrison Biggers, Jr. and wife Shannon, all of Charlotte. She will be missed by her grandchildren Rachel Kokenes, Lea Kokenes, Harrison Biggers and Hannah Biggers. She is also survived by her siblings Georgia Brooks of N. Myrtle Beach, SC, Ernest Tsitouris of Monroe, Sylvia Belk of Matthews, John Tsitouris of Monroe, Steve Tsitouris of Troutman, and her dear sister-in-law Doris Mitchell of Matthews.
One of six children, she was raised in Monroe and graduated from Benton Heights High School. She continued her education at Wingate College and received her teaching degree from Queens College in Charlotte.
She taught English at Indian Trail High School for 10 years where she enthusiastically coached the girls' basketball team to multiple championships. She returned to teaching in 1978 and finished her career with 24 years of service at Sun Valley High School.
Rachel was very proud of her father, who emigrated from Greece as a young man.
She was a member of the Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox church chapter of the Daughters of Penelope.
She was politically active in the Democratic Women of Union County and served her community as a longtime member of the Matthews Junior Women's League.
She loved her church, Indian Trail Presbyterian, and served in numerous capacities including terms on the Session, active roles in the Women of the Church, and Youth ministry and Sunday School.
Pallbearers: her nephews Charles "Chuck" Brooks, Philip Tsitouris, Eric Tsitouris, Steve Tsitouris Jr., Michael Tsitouris, Marc Tsitouris, and Scott Vickery.
