Harlon E. Chaffee, 96, of 112 Chaffee Dr. in Hiawatha died Sunday Jan. 18, 2009 at Northbrook Manor Care Center after a battle with cancer.

Harlon was born on May 30, 1912 in Hewitt, Minnesota, the son of Orr and Emma Silbaugh Chaffee. He married Betty L. Hoover on Nov. 22, 1943 in Cedar Rapids. She died on June 4, 2000.

Harlon was co-owner and operator with his brother Vernon of Spudnut Donut Shop for several years. He later was a welder at Link Belt Speeder, worked at Metal Crafters and was a carpenter for a local builder. He was a member of the American Legion, Salem United Methodist Church and proudly served in the Army during WWII with the 103rdSignal Co. of the 103rd Infantry Division where he received the Purple Heart. Harlon enjoyed fishing, playing his accordion, cooking, baking, making homemade wine and his cabin in Wisconsin. Harlon liked to tinker and was a skilled craftsman, building his own home.

Survivors include two sons, Jack and his wife, Virginia, of Newport News, Virginia, Milo of Eyota, Minnesota and a brother, Vernon of Clintonville, Wisconsin.

He is also survived by eight grandchildren, Adam, Maria, Justin, Jordan, Michael, Jeffrey, Christopher and Cara; ten great grandchildren and many other caring family members.

He was preceded in death by his wife Betty, a son Dennis, a brother Era and two sisters, Ada and Mamie.

Services at 11 AM on Friday at the Cedar Memorial Park Chapel of Memories where there will also be military rites by American Legion Hanford Post No. 5.
