Son of John "Jack" Jones Kennedy and Sarah Clayton of Barnwell District, SC and orphaned before age 10. Two of his grandparents were Alexander Kennedy and Alpha Brown (Sister of Tarlton Brown, High Sheriff of Barnwell District, SC and Revolutionary War Soldier)

W H Kennedy served with Co. H, SC 2nd Artillery. He was injured during The War Between the States. A bullet in his shoulder became infected. He was sent home to die, but survived. The bullet was never removed. At some point during the war, he duled Robert Moore Willis and was then appointed Captain of his unit.

After the war, he opened the first town merchantile, Kennedy and Sons. As a boy he worked at his brother's and uncle's store, Clayton & Kennedy, a clothier in Augusta, GA. Later the family also ran the bank, livery stable, cotton gin, and had family connections with the local newspaper.

Per Death Certificate: He was buried January 7th and died of congestion of the lungs.
