Harold was born March 1, 1895, to Norwegian immigrants Christian and Oline (Sveen) Goplen who were from Nord Torpa, Nordre Land, Oppland Co. Norway. He was the second son of nine children to grow up on the family farm in the township of Akan. He died in Roseburg, Oregon at his James Obed's home.
During World War I, he served in France in the veterinary hospital there. After the war, Harold returned to Richland County and to dariy farming. He was married to Luella Hanson on June 28, 1922 , at Avoca, in Iowa County, Wisconsin. He farmed for 51 years. He was a member of the American Legion for 61 years; the VFW, an active member of the Five Points Lutheran Church, serving on Committes and Council; he served on the Akan Town Board and School Board.
Luella passed away in 1971, after which he remained on the farm for several years. They raised three sons, Harlan, Lakewood, CO.;James Obed, Roseburg, OR.; and Ivan, Van Nuys, CA.
In 1976, he sold the farm and moved to the Carriage House in Richland Center where he lived for ten years until moving to California to live with Ivan and his family.

Harold's funeral was held on August 17, 1989 at the Five Points Lutheran Church with the Rev. Ted Borgen officiating.

The organist was Teressa Burris, with soloist Sharon (Jacobson)Wilson singing "Your Little Ones, Dear Lord", "Beautiful Savior" and "Behold a Host"
Harold was buried beside his wife in the Five Points Cemetery with Miltary Rites conducted.

The flag that resided on the coffin was given to his grandson Karl Goplen who was in the armed services at the time.

Harold is my (Paul's) Uncle,my mother Lina (Goplen) Anderson's sister.
