Elmer Barnes was the 3rd of 9 children of William Burnis Barnes born in Missouri, and Eva Barbara Dowell born in Kentucky. William and Eva are buried in Sodville (also known as Kingsdown) Cemetery in Ford County, Kansas.

Family notes state that Elmer attended Friends University in Wichita, Kansas and also sang in their choir. A photo from Friends University files shows a Barnes as a member of the 1909-10 Friends University Soccer Football Team. This Barnes is practically an exact match for a family photo of Elmer. A note below the team photo says that they won the Initial Intercollegiate Soccer Game played on Hess Field, Friends University, Nov. 5, 1909. Score: Friends University, 4; Kansas State Normal, 2.

A family note states that Elmer Barnes married Faye McCune, but I think this last name should really be McHugh. It was the second marriage for both. No info. on Elmer's first marriage.
More on McHugh; The 1910 census, Sodville Twp., Ford County, Kansas shows John F. McHugh, age 48, born Mo.; wife Margaret A., age 44; and daughter Ella F., age 18 born in Missouri. They are listed just a few names down the same page as Elmer Barnes and his family.

On June 5, 1917, registered in Scott County, Kansas for duty in the military during World War 1 and is listed as follows: Elmer Bruner Barnes, age 27, born March 19, 1890 in Linneus, Missouri, married with children, resident of Grigsby, Kansas, farmer, medium height, stout build, brown eyes, black hair.
Note that Grigsby, Kansas is shown as being in Keystone Twp., Scott County, Kansas, due east of Scott City. (1910 Scott County, Kansas Land Plat.)

In Jan. 1920, Elmer B. Barnes, age 29, born Mo.; Faye, age 28, born Mo.; and children Lillian, age 8; Marvin, age 4; and Carmen, age 1 2/12 were farming at Keystone, Scott County, Kansas. All the children were listed as being born in Kansas. (1920 Federal Census) The county seat of Scott County (Scott City) is located about 40 miles due north of Garden City, Kansas.
Note that the neighboring family in this 1920 census is J. M. McHugh, age 55, and wife Marguerette, age 52, both born in Missouri. Elmer's wife, Faye, was listed in Barnes notes as having the maiden name McCune which sounds quite similar to McHugh.

"Elmer Barnes and wife of Madison, Kas., attended the funeral of his grandfather, E. H. Barnes, last Monday." (The Democrat Herald, Smithville, Mo., dated Apr. 28, 1933.)
Note that the town of Madison is located in northern Greenwood County only about 2 miles south of the Lyon County border, and about 20 miles south of the city of Emporia.

In 1935, Elmer and family were living in rural Greenwood County, Kansas, the county seat of which is the town of Eureka. (1940 Fed. Census)

In 1940, the census lists; Elmer B. Barnes, age 50, farmer, wife Faye E., age 48, and Marvin Eakes, 20, farm laborer, living in Pct. 51, El Paso County, Colorado. Elmer is listed as having completed 1 year of college.

By 1943, Elmer and Faye Barnes are listed in the Colorado Springs City Directory. No street address or further info at this time.
