Neva Jarret Barnes was born in Grundy County, Missouri, the 7th of 9 children of William Burnis Barnes and Eva Barbara Dowell Barnes who are buried in Sodville Cemetery, Kingsdown, Ford County, Kansas.

When Neva lived in Hutchinson, Kansas, she worked in a fabric shop and another time at a wallpaper store. After her mother died in 1915, Neva moved back to Kingsdown, Kansas and worked there in a restaurant.

Neva Barnes was first married to Frank L. Grow and they had a child, Evalyn Julia Grow. Frank and Evalyn both died in 1916 and are buried with Frank's father at Eastside Cemetery in Hutchinson, Reno County, Kansas. Their graves are located on the south side of the cemetery near the road that separates the public cemetery from the prison graves, and about 1/4-1/3 of the way from the east end of the cemetery.

Neva Barnes was next married to Luther A. Clevenger in Greensburg, Kansas on August 17, 1917 and they had 2 children;

1. Waneta Fern Clevenger, married Leonard M. Weddle.
2. Alvernon Earl Clevenger, married Anna M. Schmatjen.

Neva was also a nurse for several well known doctors in their area.

As indicated in the notes of Charles L. Barnes (1892-1980) of Oswego, Kansas, he and Neva were in contact with one another to search for and share family history information. Charles was the youngest son of A. L. Barnes (1843-1923) of Burrton, Harvey County, Kansas. Neva's father was A. L.'s nephew. Neva's niece, Fern Bland, is mentioned in notes recovered from the widow of Neva's brother, Roy Barnes, in 2000.

Starting in 1943, Neva wrote Bloom, Kansas news items for the Minneola Record and the Dodge City Daily Globe newspapers. These articles could contain bits of her Barnes family history since it appears that Neva may be the author of her parent's biography shown on pg. 85 in Jay S. Andrew's book, "History of Bloom, Kansas," 1967.

More than 200 people attended when Neva and Luther celebrated their 40th Wedding Anniversary in 1957.

At the time of her death, Neva was survived by 2 children, five grandchildren and eleven great grandchildren.
