Wife of William Hill Simmons, Sr., "War of 1812" ~ married October 25, 1856, Fayette Co., GA

July 18, 1875 - Southern Christian Advoicate (p. 112)

Mrs. Elizabeth Simmons (whose maiden name was Hunt), was born in Hancock Co., GA, and died in Spalding County, GA, June 7, 1875, age 73.

She joined the Methodist church when eleven years old under the ministry of Rev. Wm. Arnold at Rock Springs Camp Ground, and for sixty-two yeas was a faithful, consistent members. She was twice married. She lived with her first husband, James Patton, sixteen years. At his death she was in the prime of womanhood, with a large family committed to her care. For eighteen years, as a widow, she lived in daily care, for the training and education of her children. At the time of her second marriage, they had all married into highly respectible families, except for the youngest son, Matthew Patton, who fell in the Confederate service at Murfreesboro, Tennessee. She was married to William H. Simmons in 1856, with whom she lived happily for ten years. Left a widow again for nine years, she spent most of her time upon missions of mercy among her neighbors. Vivacious, cheerful, and with a heart always full of sympathy, she was a great blessing to the sick around her. Her physician said, "Aunt Betsy's death is a calamity to this section, "Red Oak Church in Pike County of which brother Wm. H. Simmons was a class leader for thirty-nine years, suffers now another heavy loss in the death of one of its parent and most saintly members. She spoke calmly of death -- was perfectly resigned -- rather desired to depart, and be at rest in peace with Christ. As declines the light of day, so greatly Sister passed from earth to glory. When voice failed, she waved a gentle adieu to weeping friends. She has left us, but not forever. We shall join her on the other shore with the sainted father who has preceded us.

Simmons Family Cemetery, Williamson-Zebulon Rd., Williamson, Pike Co., GA.

The only evidence of the "Simmons Family Cemetery" is a large concrete slab that is visible from Williamson-Zebulon Road. There are no tombstones, only what appears to have been a rock wall surrounding the cemetery. The concrete slab was put there by the GA DOT highway many years ago when the cemetery was discovered. The cemetery is on wooded lot that was at one time the Simmons property and near the intersection of Williamson-Zebulon and Reidsboro Roads, Williamson, Pike County. No longer is there a "sign" showing the "Simmons Family Cemetery."
