John Hunt served in the San Augustine Rangers Mounted Gunman of the Indian Wars. He served under "two Captains," 1st., under Capt. Goodloe's Company and 2nd., Capt. Wm. Kimbro's, San Augustine Mounted Gunmen Company Volunteers, August to September 1838, of the Cherokee War Battle, Nacogdoches, Texas.

John Hunt gave his land to the Cold Springs Baptich Church and an neighbor gave his land to the church cemetery.

Husband of Sarah Jane (Chandler) Hunt ~ married February 22, 1855, Cherokee Co., TX.

She m. 1st., Benjamin Griffin, Jr. ~ married September 8, 1840, Perry Co., AL.

Regarding the Griffin and Hunt families history, was contributed by Beverly J. Weatherly Conner Huckestein, 2014. She is descended from Benjamin and Sarah Jane (Chandler) Griffin, Jr. and their daughter, Martha Jane Griffin, married Samuel Jiles Weatherly, Sr., C.S.A., their son, James Madison, Weatherly, father of Samuel Ladson Weatherly (Beverly's Grandfather).

Their eldest daughter, Martha Susan Hunt the daughter of John and Sarah Jane (Chandler) Hunt and including her "two husbands" are also buried in Cold Springs Cemetery.
