Ruby married Jackson J. Smyth at the age of 16 in Duval County. He was many years her senior and was a blacksmith and a millwright. They lived in Panama Park, Jacksonville, FL and by 1920 they were living in Bradford Co., FL. Ruby died died tragically in Manhattan, NY while visiting her sister Bessie. She had a brain cancer which took her life quickly. Her only son, Clarence Smyth, also died young and tragically when he was hit by a train in 1923. Her husband reverted to his original name of Clarence Joseph Simmons after Ruby died and lived to be over 100 years of age and died 1977.

Funeral services for Mrs. J. J. Smith were held yesterday afternoon at 3:30 o'clock from Burns and Clymore's Funeral Home, 45 West Church Street. Rev. Allen C. Shuler, pastor of Calvary Baptist church, officiating. Pallbearers were: W. H. Odom, H.L. Sipe, E.O. Harrison, R.D. Odom, H. E. Milley, R.C. Miller. The funeral services were largely attended by Jacksonville chapter No. 15 O.E.S. also Jacksonville Temple No. 3 Pythian Sisters; also a large gathering of friends of the family. The body was laid to rest in the family lot in Evergreen cemetery. At the grave the Kamelias marched around the grave and place a large wreath of flowers on it.
