As a young man of 21, John moved in a covered wagon with his parents, Walter and Elizabeth McGalliard Bean, to Illinois. As the story goes, "the wagon train lost it's way in a blinding snowstorm in the mountains of TN. Walter, driver of the lead wagon, dropped the reins and let the horses pick their way through to safety".
Walter, Elizabeth and 9 children crossed over from TN into IL at Shawneetown abt 1825. The family moved on into Jefferson Co. and settled in Casner Twp.
After helping to get the family settled, John returned to Franklin Co., TN to his sweetheart Elizabeth Awalt. She was the daughter of Revolutionary Soldier Michael Awalt and Eva Speck Awalt. Elizabeth and John married abt. 1829 in Franklin Co., TN and had their first child born TN:

AR, Thomas J 7 b. AR. His oldest son Michael Marion Bean (this census taker spelled their name Been) was living next door with his new wife Emeline, he 21 she 17 both b. TN.
In 1860 Johnson Co AR Spadra twp; Enu. 13 Jul 1860; hh #1091-1092 John Bean 56 b. NC, Elizabeth 60 b. NC, and Thomas 15 b. AR. His son Solomon George Bean was living next door with his family and wife Arri Ann Mabry Bean. Also his sister, Gooley Bean Sanders lived up from him with her husband Moses Sanders.
In 1861 John was in Gallatin Co., IL visiting relatives. He could have traveled with his son John R. and his wife Analiza Jane Smith Bean and their children. (For more on this family see Elizabeth Martin Smith ) John's father Walter Bean and brothers Asbury and General Francis Marion Bean were living there at that time. We do not know the circumstances, but John Bean died sometime in 1861. He had made it known that he wanted to be buried in the land he loved, back in Johnson Co., AR where his children were living. His body was moved back to Clarksville and he was buried at Mt. Vernon Cem., named after the town of Mt. Vernon in Jefferson Co., IL.
