This is the daughter of Jeremiah Phillips, DD, and Hannah C. Phillips, Free Will Baptist missionaries to Orissa, India.
Cemetery record shows "Helen M. 'Nellie', but she was called "Nellie" Maria and dates of birth & death are same in the cemetery dth record as the dates from the book, "Family Record of Jeremiah Phillips, DD,..." by Hannah P. (Phillips) Stone, her sister.
Nellie Maria was baptized by her father at Prairie City, Ill, Jan 18, 1864. She graduated from Hillsdale College, MI in June 1875. She engaged in teaching and the study of medicine until 1881, graduating at that time from Adelbert Medical College, Cleveland, Ohio. She served with her parents and a rather large, extended family as a medical misionary to India, from 1881 to 1903. She died in Rochester, MN and it isn't known if she was employed with a medical facility there at the time of her death. Her brother, James Liddel, bros-in-laws, Thomas W Burkholder, R. Gilbert Keyes,R.Gilbert Platt, and several nephews were physicians also.
(She is bur in same plot with her father, Jeremiah, and her sisters, Julia Burkholder, and Ida Orissa.
