Daughter of Jeremiah L. Phillips, DD, and Hanna (Cummings) Phillips, Free Will Baptist missionaries to Orissa Province India. She graduated from Hillsdale College, MI, in 1877, and was a missionary to India from 1877-1889, time of her death, at age 32 yrs and 5 months. She came from an extended family of medical missionaries and ministers. Her mother lies buried in India with other family members there. Above is a ship's passenger list where Ida came to U.S. at age 16, probably to attend college, in Dec. 30, 1870. She was with a clergyman's family, Rev. Obadiah B. Batchelder,M.D., who worked with the Phillips family in India.
