Marlene Hoopes Withers, 72, of Rexburg, died Monday, Dec. 29, 2008, in Logan, Utah.
She was born Aug. 21, 1936, in Rexburg, to Horace Wylie Hoopes and Mae Della Beattie Hoopes. She attended grade school in Rexburg and graduated from Madison High School in 1955. She also graduated from Ricks College and attended Brigham Young University.
She married LaVar Madsen Withers on Aug. 21, 1958, in the Idaho Falls LDS Temple. They lived at Philadelphia, Pa., and Blackfoot, Idaho, before making their home in Rexburg. She was a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and served in various church callings, primarily musical positions. She loved to sing, and sang with choirs and trios as a young adult. She enjoyed traveling and loved doing handwork, camping, the mountains and nature. She loved being with her children and grandchildren.
She is survived by her children, Kathy (Wyn) Seeley of Rigby, Kevin (Colleen) Withers of Slippery Rock, Pa., Karyn (Scott) Smith of Syracuse, Utah, and Kristen (Brandon) Smith of Smithfield, Utah; siblings, MaryLou (Lynn) Thomson of Rexburg, Robert (Margaret) Hoopes of Rhinelander, Wis., Bonnie (Lane) Ward of Rexburg, Steve (Dana) Hoopes of Tetonia and Brenda (Jack) Daily of Eagle, Idaho; and eight grandchildren and one on the way. She was preceded in death by her parents and her husband, Dr. LaVar Withers.
Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 3, 2009, at the Cresthaven LDS Ward Chapel, 1070 S. Second East in Rexburg, with Bishop James Greene officiating. The family will receive friends from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. Friday at Flamm Funeral Home and from 10 a.m. to 10:45 a.m. at the church prior to services. Interment will be in Rexburg Cemetery.
