Gary Dale Amdahl was born on May 1, 1946, at the Peabody Hospital in Webster, SD, the third child of Dale Percy and Ruth Jeanette (Hjellming) Amdahl. His first home was on a farm in Laura Township, rural Summit. At age two he moved with his parents and sister Sharon to Blooming Valley Township where he started grade school at Sunny Side School, Blooming Valley #1. In 1957 the Amdahl family moved to Skyline Ranch gulch north of Marvin, SD, where they lived in one of Grant County's first log cabins. Gary finished his grade school at the Marvin School in 1949. He received his GED in the service. Gary worked by his father's side when he was growing up. He milked cows, fed pigs and cattle and helped with harvesting. Prior to 1959 he moved with his parents to Kennebec, SD. They moved to Milbank in 1959 and to a farm near Harrisburg, SD, in 1960. In 1962 they moved to Summit. As a teenager he lived and worked for Bud and Carol Thorpe. Gary was baptized and confirmed in the Lebanon Lutheran and Hope Lutheran Churches and attended Sunday School with his brothers and sisters at Lebanon Lutheran Church.

Gary was a veteran of the Vietnam War having served his country in the U.S. Army from January 14, 1966, until his honorable discharge on January 12, 1968. He received the National Defense Service Medal, the Vietnam Service Medal, and the Vietnam Campaign Medal.

Gary was united in marriage to Eunice Gramberg on April 11, 1978, at Sisseton, SD. Following marriage, the couple lived near Pierre, SD. In the fall 1980 they moved to rural Marvin, SD. Gary worked at the O'Farrell Ranch and for individual members of the O'Farrell family. In 2000 they moved back to Summit. At the time of his death, he was a cattle rancher in Blooming Valley Township, rural Summit.

Survivors include his wife Eunice, rural Summit; his two sons, Justin Amdahl and his wife Lea, Flagstaff, AZ, and Dale Amdahl, Watertown, SD; his daughter Amanda Sandberg and her husband Aaron, Hermitage, TN; two grandchildren, Allan and Jena Amdahl, Flagstaff, AZ; his mother, Ruth Amdahl, Golden Living Center in Milbank; his four brothers, Leon Amdahl and his wife Della, Woonsocket, SD; Leslie Amdahl and his wife Cynthia, Rosholt, SD; Kevin Amdahl and his wife Lori and Terry Amdahl, all of Sioux Falls; his three sisters, Sharon Snell and husband Virgil, Milbank; Linda Bauman and husband Galen, Watertown, SD; and Shelly Anderson and husband Arlo, Summit; many nieces and nephews; and his godmother, Norma Jean Hjellming, Minneapolis, MN. Gary was preceded in death by his father and his son, Alan James Amdahl.

Funeral services for Gary Amdahl, age 60, of rural Summit, SD, will begin at 10:30 a.m. on Wednesday, March 7, 2007, at the Summit Hall in Summit, SD. Missionary Pastor Joe Beard of the Summit Bible Church will officiate. Gary died on Thursday, March 1, 2007, at his farm home. The organist will be Sandy Dingsor and the soloist will be Liz (Waddell) Brooks. Visitation will be at the Emanuel-Patterson Funeral Home in Milbank on Tuesday from 4-6 p.m. and at the Summit Hall on Wednesday one hour before services. Pallbearers will be Marlin Snell, Paul O'Farrell, Steve Ellsworth, Loren Gramberg, Kelly Faeth, and Tellus Waddell. Burial will be in the Osceola No. 2 Cemetery at Marvin, SD, with graveside military rites presented by the Birch-Miller American Legion Post #9 and the Grant County VFW Post #3486, of Milbank.
