Son of Martin County, Minnesota pioneers Erastus Adams and Celestia Randall. When he was about two years old, he moved with his parents from his native state of New York to Pennsylvania. His brother George was born in Pennsylvania in 1847, and David was born in Pennsylvania in 1852. About 5 years later, the family moved to Minnesota.
Benjamin never married. His brothers were George, David, and William Adams; his sister was Mary Anne Adams.
