Born in Slovakia of the Austria-Hungarian Empire in what is now present day Czech Republic, he emigrated to America in 1911 and settled in Fayette County, Pennsylvania. He worked as a coal miner and lived in Footedale for most of his life. Steve was the father of eleven children: Mary Sheranek, Anna Freiberg, Joseph Sumego, Martha Guy, Helen Magerko, Pauline Grace, Alverta Smargie, Steve Sumego Jr., Richard Sumego, and Edward Sumego. He was a member of Saint Precopius Roman Catholic Church and died in Uniontown, Pennsylvania in 1964 when he was 77 years old. He is buried next to his wife.
