On December 2, 1876, she married William Henry Schaeffer and had her five daughters, Laura Susanna, Mary Alice, Anna Mabel, Clara Robeson, and Naomi May. (NOTE: Please don't send suggestions on how to spell Schaeffer. It's spelled several ways in various sources. The bottom line to me is that she signed her husband's death certificate using the same spelling as is on this memorial, and presumably she knew how to spell it.)
After William's death on March 17, 1911, she married Daniel J. Shade the son of Jacob and Catharine (nee Smeltz or Smoltz) Shade on September 17, 1925. Most of this info comes from her marriage license application for her second marriage.
There is a March 25, 1911 snippet in the Harrisburg Telegraph stating that her brothers, D.H. and George D of Harrisburg and Ralph of Norristown attended "the Schaeffer funeral in Curtin on Tuesday". It's not known to me if her brother George named his daughter Mary in her honor or in his mother's honor. Sister Mary was but two years older than him and they may have been close, and George did name his one son Daniel, probably after his brother (my great grandpa) who was two years younger than he.
Her obituary (source unknown but possibly the Elizabethville Echo):
Mrs Mary A. Shade
Age 86, widow of Daniel Shade, died at the home of her daughter Mrs Norman Lesher in Millersburg, Tuesday morning. Surviving: 3 daughters; Mrs. Lesher of Millersburg; Mrs. Anna Radle of Elizabethville R.D.; and Mrs. Alice Smeltz of Northumberland. Two sisters, Mrs. Wilson Romberger of Harrisburg and Mrs. Clara Harner of Elizabethville. 14 grandchildren and 23 great granchildren. Funeral at Minier Funeral Home in Millersburg. Burial in St Johns.
