Open house for Mr. and Mrs. Joseph S. Byrum in observance of their golden wedding anniversary will be held Sundat at the home of their son and daughter-in-law, Mr. and Mrs. H. S. Byrum of 422 East Manning avenue. Friends are invited to call between 3 p.m. and 4 o'clock.
Mr. Byrum and H. Maudie Shafer were married March 22, 1910, at the hom of Rev. A. W. Miller of Pleasant Corners Baptist church near Eddyville. Attendants at the wedding were his brother-in-law and sister, Mr. and Mrs. Harry L. Miller, Mrs. Byrum lived at Eddyville before her marriage and he lived at Dudley.
In addition to their son in Ottumwa they have a daughter, Mrs. Jack I. Newell of Columbus, Ohio, four grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
Mr. Byrum retired January 31, 1958 as a brakeman on the east Ottumwa division of the C. R. & Q railroad. They are member of the Finley Avenue Baptist church and live at 122 North Ward street.

Joseph S. Byrum, 80, of 122 No. Ward St. died at 5:45 a.m., Sunday at St. Joseph Hospital following an illness of several weeks. He retired as a trainman for the Burlington Railroad in 1958.
The son of George W. and Minerva Crambilt Byrum was born in Dudley Jan. 13, 1888, but had been a resident of Ottumwa most of his life. He was a member of Bethany Baptist church, the Brotherhood of Railroad Trainmen, and Modern Woodmen of the Word.
On March 22, 1910 he married Maudie Shafer in Ottumwa. She survives. Also surviving are one son. H.D. (Buff) Byrum of Ottumwa; one daughter, Mrs. Arlene Newell of Columbus Ohio; four grandchildren and three great-grandchildren; three sisters, Mrs. Leora Moore, Mrs. Bessie Miller, and Mrs. Ruth Warner, all of Ottumwa.
He was preceded in death by one son, Gerald, in infancy and two brothers, Leslie and Marshall.
Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday at Bethany Baptist Church in charge of the pastor the Rev. Gordon McMillan. Burial will be in Pleasant Corners Cemetery in Monroe county.
Pallbearers will be John Roberts, James Brown, Wayne Moddrell, Van Miller, Ray Tomklin, and Robert O'Neil. The casket will remain at Johnson Funeral chapel until 9 a.m. Tuesday when it will be taken to the church and closed at the beginning of the service.
The family has established a memorial fund payable to the fuilding fund at Bethany Baptist Church.
