Services Held For Afton Pioneer Woman
Funeral services were conducted in the Afton Second-Third Ward Chapel Monday Nov 30 for Bertha Isabelle Blanchard Kennington, 86, wife of Henry Kennington. Counselor Ivan L. Roberts of the Second Ward Bishopric conducted. Mrs Kennington passed peacefully away in her sleep at her home in Afton in the early morning hours of Friday, Nov 27. She had been ill for a long time.
She was born at Clarkston, Utah Jan 24, 1874, the daughter of Jerusha Celeste Walker and William Cook Blanchard. The family moved first to Montpelier, Idaho and later to Star Valley, where at the age of 16 she met William Henry Kennington and married him Oct 23, 1890 at Montpelier. The marriage was later solemnized in the Logan LDS Temple.
Mr Kennington fulfilled two long-term missions for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, leaving his wife with two small children the first time and four children the second time. She kept the home fires burning maturing in the characteristics that everyone learned to love and admire in her.
It was during the time when she was alone with her children that the "Indian Scare" took place in Star Valley.
The Kenningtons moved to Thayne for a time where Henry operated a store, but they moved back to Afton. Mrs Kennington took up nursing and went from home to home, giving help where needed. After they built their large new home, where they have lived ever since, she was able to bring patients into her home. Her nursing care ws primarily maternity cases. However, many convalescents were cared for and speeded to recovery under her efficient ministration. Over 300 patients were cared for in her home before a modern hospital relieved the pressure. She was an efficient housekeeper as well as a competent nurse and a good mother.
With all her responsibilities at home Mrs Kennington also found time to serve in various capacities in the church. she was first counselor in the original Afton Ward Primary. When the Afton wards were first divided she was chosen to be a counselor in the Relief Society.
Mr and Mrs Kennington had many wonderful years together. They observed their 69th wedding anniversary on Oct 23 of this year. Both enjoyed good health until just recently, when Mrs Kennington became ill.
She is survived by her husband, three daughters and a son, Mrs Charles (Bertha) Johns, Afton; Mrs William (Erma) Frome, St. Anthony, Idaho; Mrs Neil (Elda) Brough, Salt Lake City, Utah; and Elbert H. Kennington, Afton. One of her 23 grandchildren, Mrs Blanch Wallred of Salt Lake City was raised from a little girl in Mrs Kennington's home. She is survived by 59 great grandchildren and two brothers, LeRoy Blanchard, Dayton Ore.; and Eugene Blanchard, Oswego Ore. One son and one daughter preceded her in death.
Burial was in the Afton Cemetery.
