Martinus was the third son of Pieter Sr and Gijsbertje (vanHouwelingen) deJong born on a farm near the city of Arkel in the Netherlands. As required by law, Martinus registered for military service when he was 19 years old. He sought a replacement who entered service Dec 15, 1855 for a 5 year term. At the end of the 5 years he completed his service thereby completing Martinus military service.

Martinus and Grietje van Rooden were married 24 Jan. 1863 in Oosterwijk, Zuid-Holland by the mayor of Oosterwijk, Hugo Bel. They settled in Hoogblokland in May of that year. In 1865 Martinus, Grietje and their oldest son, Pieter Jacob, born 17 Dec 1863, left Hoogblokland to sail to the United States. They left their youngest son, Arie, born 13 Nov 1864, with family in the Netherlands, thinking he was too young to make the journey. Unfortunately, when more of the family emigrated to the US the next year, Arie was with them and contracted cholera on the ship as did many. He died during that voyage.

Martinus and Grietje had other children - Arie Cornelius, born 16 Aug 1866 in Marion Co, IA, Albert born 3 Nov 1867, Antonie born 14 Jan 1869, Gysbertje born 4 Jan 1870, and John born 23 Nov 1871, the last four all born in Mahaska Co IA.

Martinus and Grietje farmed in Black Oak Township in Mahaska Co. They raised wheat, corn, oats, potatoes, and hay. They also made butter and molasses. They had some livestock but most of their farming was from the land.

Martinus died 24 Mar 1876 and is buried in Black Oak Cemetery near Pella, IA. and shares a headstone with his mother who died one week after he did.
