Valley Pioneer Meets Accidental Death Sat.
Perhaps no death of this valley so shocked and saddened the people as did the tragic death of Mark Hurd, which occurred Saturday morning when his team ran away with him while on the mowing machine.
Brother and Sister Hurd passed thru most of the hardships of this valley as they came here 49 years ago. Living first in a log cabin where the Venter home now stands. At first this cabin had no floor, they walked on the joists as they went about. A kind neighbor gave them hay enough to fill between the joists and sister Hurd spread a carpet over this making it much better.
Brother Hurd had two wives, one lived on one side of this cabin and one or the other side and in the evening they sat and sang. The first winter was long, they had no light at night except from the stove, as there was no coal oil in the valley.
Brother Hurd was a passionate lover of music. "Without a song the day would never end," such are the lines of the old song, which might have been taken from the motive of living by Mark Hurd, who made his prupose that of lightening the tasks of his neighbors and gladdening their hearts with his songs and music.
From his birth in 1863 in Middleton, Yorkshire, England to his death Brother Hurd's life was a source of inspiration to those who knew him. To know him was to love him and his music.

Mark HURD is the son of John HURD and Martha STOCKEL (STOCKELL)
Mark HURD married Elizabeth GREEN 20 Jan 1886 in Logan, Cache, Ut
