TEMPLE - Funeral services for Woodrow W. Allen, 85, will be at 10 a.m. Monday at the Harper-Talasek Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Gary DeSalvo officiating. Burial will follow at Temple Garden of Memories by Harper-Talasek Funeral Home. Visitation will be from 9-10 a.m. Monday.

Mr. Allen died Friday, Dec. 5, 2008, at a local hospital. He was born Dec. 29, 1922, to Henry Franklin and Hannah (Hale) Allen in Winters.

He served for three years in the Army Air Corps during WWII, flying bombing missions in B-29s in China-India-Burma Theater and earning five battle stars. He graduated from Texas Tech University in 1949 with a bachelor's degree in animal husbandry. He later received his master's in banking from SMU. He married Avis Barrick Fuchs on July 24, 1949, in Abernathy. He taught high school vocational agricultural for three years then worked for Anderson Clayton as a seed buyer and later supervisor for eight years. He then worked as a banker, the last 20 years as senior vice president of Hale County State Bank in Plainview. He was a trustee and chairman of the Central Plains Mental Health and Retardation Center from 1967-92 and was a founding member of the board of directors of Community MHMR Centers, serving from 1976-92 as secretary, treasurer, vice chairman and chairman of the board. He was active in Rotary International, earning the Paul Harris Accolade. He also served as a member of chambers of commerce from 1960-92. He received various awards, including the HEB-Mary Holdsworth Butt Award for volunteer leadership in mental health in Texas. In 1992 he was elected to the Texas MHMR Council as one of three people with lifetime director emeritus status.

Survivors include his wife; three daughters, Eva McCasland of Temple, Cathy Rude of Kathy and Carole Oakes of Garland; a sister, Lucille Bookman of Waco; 13 grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.
