Robert was a son of Susanna Kingman and Capt. Chilton Latham. He had 6 siblings: Charles , Jane, Arthur, James Chilton, Joseph, Susanne and Mary. He married first: Mary Johnson, who died 10 days after their first child was born, Robert Johnson Latham, who later died before his 4th birthday. Her family suspected that Robert poisoned her, but was cleared of those charges. Her family still believed it and Robert had to move away. The child lived and his name was Robert. He then married Bethia Hayward and she died of "mysterious circumstances" as well. Rumor had it that Robert was courting who would become his third wife, while still married to his second wife! Bethia was a widow when she married Robert.
His third wife was Jerusha Hooper. It was said that she killed him, before he could kill her!! Jerusha was an herbalist and midwife.
