David was a son of Maj. James Snodgrass and Ann Long. The family apparently moved from Washington County, Virginia, westward to White County, Tennessee, before he came of age.

On 23 May 1811 he married Mary Ann Johnson there and she soon gave birth to the first of their 11 children:

Mary Ann having died, David married Minerva Brown 11 April 1833. Together, they produced five children:

David died at the (for then) quite advanced age of 75, having married thrice, and giving the world a total of (at least) 21 children.
