From Red Lake Falls, MN newspaper:
Hillcrest resident of the month

Genny Scully at Hillcrest 30 years

Many people don't think twice about living in a house for 30 years but living in a nursing home for 30 years would seem like a long time.

Genny Scully, a resident of Hillcrest Nursing Home in Red Lake Falls, has been living in the nursing home for just over 30 years, since July 25, 1967. She has been at Hillcrest Nursing longer than any other resident, according to Carl Arlt, activities director at Hillcrest.

In that 30 years she said she hasn't seen many changes at Hillcrest except the new window in her room. And through that window, she said she likes to watch the construction (across the street) going on, Scully said she grew up in Gentilly and attended school "right next to the farm." But "I didn't graduate," she said.

While she was growing up, Scully said she "kept the kids," meaning she took care of her brothers and sisters since she was the third oldest girl in a family of four boys and five girls.

While living at home she said she cleaned the house, washed dishes and canned some of the vegetables in the garden, such as tomatoes, cucumbers, beets and carrots.

She worked very little outside the home and she was never married, she added.

Since living at Hillcrest, Scully said she likes playing dice, bingo, and card bingo and her favorite programs on TV are Wheel of Fortune and Lawrence Welk. She also likes to go outside, she added.

Twice a week she said she attends Mass at the nursing home, on Sundays and Wednesdays.

As for her roommate, Scully said, "I like her sometimes."

When asked about the food, she said a bologna sandwich with lettuce is her favorite meal, which she has every night before bed.
