Ray was born to John Randolph and Viola Elizabeth [Nichols] Armstead on 3/19/1905 in Kester, Roane Co., WV. He was married to Hallie White and had two children, Ray, Jr. and Mildred. They divorced and he married Ruth Lea Patton in Clay County on 10/30/1931. They were the parents of ten children, Frederick, Ollie Wray, Mary Etta, Janice, Warren, Kay, Calvin, Paul, Ruth and Charles. He was a foreman for Cabot Corporation. After his wife, Ruth, passed away, Ray married a girl he went to school with, Lucy Woody. Ray became ill with cancer and passed away on 9/30/1978.
