SUMMITVILLE — Virgil L. Elsworth, 80, Summitville, died Nov. 6, 2008, at Community Hospital of Anderson after a brief illness.

He was born Aug. 30, 1928, in Alexandria, the son of Ferrel E. Elsworth and Opal (Eaton) Elsworth, and resided in the Summitville area all of his lifetime.

Virgil attended Summitville schools. He enlisted in the United States Army and served from 1947 to 1950. He worked for Kraft Foods, formerly of Summitville. He retired from Anaconda Wire and Cable of Marion in 1990 after 32 years of employment.

Virgil enjoyed camping and traveling and was particularly fond of the ocean. He enjoyed cooking and will be remembered for his Friday night fish fries in Summitville.

Survivors include his wife, Bertha (Butcher) Elsworth, whom he married June 23, 1951; two sons, Gerald Elsworth and Kim Elsworth, both of Summitville; a daughter, Linda (Allen) York of Elwood; four grandchildren, Heather (Chuck) Winslow of Fairmount, Staci York of Elwood, Kyle (Alison) Elsworth of Fort Wayne, and Christopher Elsworth of Fairmount; six great-grandchildren; two brothers, Denzil (Carol) Elsworth of Summitville, and Walker (Nancy) Elsworth of Anderson; and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; a son, Terry Elsworth; and two brothers, Norman Elsworth and Milford Elsworth.

Services will take place at 1 p.m. Monday at Owens-Noffze Funeral Home, 1009 W. Walnut St., Summitville, with Pastor Gary McCaslin of Alethia Fellowship and Ministry Center, Anderson, officiating. Burial will be in Vinson Memorial Cemetery Summitville with military honors provided by Elwood Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 5782 Honor Guard.
