Dorothy E. Fox was born Jan. 22, 1922, in Harrington, Wash., daughter of George and Ethel Younce Ekins. She graduated from Reardan (Wash.) High School and was awarded a full scholarship to Washington State University, Pullman. She transferred to St. Luke's Hospital School of Nursing, Spokane, Wash., graduating in 1944, and became licensed as a registered nurse in 1945 in the states of Washington and Florida.
She married Charles T. Fox , a staff sergeant in the Army Air Corps during World War II, on July 9, 1944, in Reardan Lutheran Church. After their marriage the couple was transferred by the Army to Orlando, Fla., where Mrs. Fox was a staff nurse at Orange General Hospital. After the war, they moved to Ogdensburg in 1946, where she was a private duty nurse at A. Barton Hepburn Hospital.
In 1947, the couple purchased the former Claude H. Preston Funeral Home in Heuvelton. Mrs. Fox graduated from the Simmons Institute of Mortuary Science in 1951, and became a licensed funeral director to assist her husband in the operation of their funeral homes. In 1963, the Fox Funeral Homes were awarded the Golden Rule Award by the Order of the Golden Rule in New York City for their outstanding efforts in the funeral directing profession. They owned Fox Funeral Homes in Heuvelton, Lisbon, Ogdensburg, and Hammond until 1979, when they retired.
After retirement, the couple spent their winters in Lake Mary, Fla., and summers at their cottage on the St. Lawrence River. Mr. Fox died April 17, 1998.
Mrs. Fox was a member of the Heuvelton United Methodist Church, served as Sunday school superintendent for a number of years, and was active in the United Methodist Women's group. She was a member and past matron of Florence B. Beattie Chapter 349, Order of the Eastern Star, Heuvelton, a past royal matron of Peace Court 159 of the Ogdensburg Amaranth, and a member of the Literary Guild of Heuvelton. She enjoyed collecting salt and pepper shakers and fox figurines. She also enjoyed flower gardening and spending time with her family.
