Mary Clark was born December 11, 1862 in Ellenburg, Clinton County, New York to parents Thomas Alfred Clark and Ethie (Covey) Clark. Her father fought in the Civil War for the United States and died of typhoid fever in Virginia in 1865. Following her father's death, her mother married her father's younger brother, Caleb Clark. Mary and her brother William were soon joined by half siblings/cousins Julia Elizabeth Clark and Emma Clark. Sometime after their births, Caleb Clark abandoned his young family and travelled west.

Mary Clark married Louie Tellor in 1880 in Clinton County, New York. The young Tellor family travelled west and settled in Southern Illinois. Louie ran a saw mill and provided lumber for his neighbors. Mary was involved in an accident when a horse kicked her in the face. From that point foward her face was deformed in the area around her left eye.
