Ethie Covey was born in Canada to parents Henry and Susan Covey. Her great grandfather Samuel Covey (1755-1822) was a British Loyalist during the American Revolution, and many of his descendants moved to Canada following the war. Her great (x5) grandfather James Covey (1635-1712) was originally from England and came to Massachusetts in the mid-1600's before settling in Rhode Island.

Ethie married Thomas Alfred Clark in Clinton County, New York on September 28, 1860. The couple had two children, Mary and William. Thomas fought in the Civil War for the United States and died of typhoid fever in Virginia in 1865. Following her husband's death, Ethie married her husband's younger brother, Caleb Clark. Mary and her brother William were soon joined by half siblings/cousins Julia Elizabeth Clark and Emma Clark. Sometime after their births, Caleb Clark abandoned his young family and travelled west.

Ethie moved to Union County, Illinois along with her two oldest children and their families. She was known as "Grandma Clark" and made her home in Mountain Glen until her death in 1895..
