Virgil M. 'Dick' Black of Cunningham was killed about 9:15 a.m. Wednesday when crossing the Paris and Mt. Pleasant Railroad tracks a mile east of Deport. His car was hit by the railway motor car and dragged 165 feet along the tracks.

He was between 50 and 60 and is survived by his wife, 3 children and several brothers and sisters.

Virgil May 'Dick' Black, 48, of Cunningham, was killed instantly on Wednesday morning about 9 o'clock when the northbound P. & Mt. P. motor car struck his automobile as he attempted to cross ahead of the train. He had come to Deport, accompanied by Sid Grant, and was returning to his home when the accident occurred.

W. H. Thompson, justice of the peace, who, with Dr. A. G. Elder, was called to the scene, said the front wheels of the automobile were on one rail and the rear wheels on the other, when the crash occurred.

Deceased was born at Cunningham in April, 1898.

He was married to Hilda Young in 1916 and six children were born to them: Mrs. William Anderson, Meldina, Virgil Grant, Jo Nell Black of Cunningham; Mrs. Earline Brazil, Vernon; and Howell Black in the Army stationed at Fort Dix, N. J.; six grandchildren, seven sisters -- Mrs. Bessie Barton, Mrs. Iva Rhoades, Mrs. Frankie Archibald, all of Cunningham, Mrs. Ruby Bell, Mangrum, Ok., Mrs. Lillie Talley, Dallas, Mrs. Birdie Harris, Paris and Mrs. Euna Taylor, Deport; three brothers, Arthur Black, Los Angeles, Cal.; Jake Black, Sulphur Springs and Warren Black of Cunningham.

Funeral services for Virgil May 'Dick' Black of Cunningham, were held Saturday afternoon at 2:30 o'clock at the Cunningham Baptist Church by the Rev. Curtis Hoover. Burial was in the cemetery at that place.

Funeral services for Virgil May 'Dick' Black of Cunningham, were held Saturday afternoon at 2:30 o'clock at the Cunningham Baptist Church by the Rev. Curtis Hoover. Burial was in the cemetery at that place.
