Preston Carter Dies Following Long Illness

Funeral services for Preston Dewitt Carter, prominent Chickasaw county farmer and landowner, who died at 4:15 am, Friday, Nov. 3, at the Okolona Community Hospital following a prolonged illness, were conducted from the Van Vleet Methodist Church at 2 pm, Saturday, Nov. 4.

The Rev. Bobby Hankins, the Rev. Crawford Ray and the Rev. Roy Brown officiated at the services. Interment was in the Asbury Cemetery with Houston Funeral Home in charge.

Active pallbearers were: Gus Ashby, Billy Walker, Howard Ray, Billy Thomas, Hugh Lee Paden, and Bill Clements.

Honorary pallbearers were: Robert Ashby, Fred Dulaney, G D Wimberley, Dr. J D Dyer, Dr. J H Shoemaker of Okolona, H B Abernethy, W J Linn, M C Dougherty, Cecil Conner, E A McCoy, C H Elliotte, all of Tupelo; William White of Starkville, W T Barnette of Booneville, and Johnny Murphree of Trebloc.

Mr. Carter, of Van Vleet, was a lifelong resident of Chickasaw county.

At the time of his death he was chairman of the Board of Directors of the Tupelo Production Credit Association. He was a charter member and former president of the Association. Up until ill health forced Mr. Carter to retire, he had been closely identified with much of the progress of Chickasaw county, and this area, and was widely known in state agricultural circles.

He was born Oct. 30, 1894, the son of A C Carter and Anna Shaw Carter. He was a member of the Van Vleet Methodist Church.

He is survived by his wife, Mrs. Clara Carter; a son, Dan Carter, and a brother, H B Carter, Sr., all of Van Vleet. He also leaves three grandchildren.
