Thomas J.Austin of Maroa died at 10 oclock Tuesday night at the Decatur and Macon county hospital. He was almost seventy three years old. He had been in poor health for some time. Over a week ago gangrene developed in one of his legs. The limb was amputated a week ago, but too late to stop the progress of the disease.
Mr. Austin as born eight miles west of Decatur,Nov. 5, 1853 and had lived in Macon county all his life. He was widely known and had a great many friends all over the county. For five years he was a teacher in the rural schools of Macon county, later devoting his time to farming. He was a member of the Maroa Presbyterian church and was prominent in religious affairs in his community and had just retired from the presidency of the Macon county Sunday school association.
He was an elder in the Presbyterian church and was always active in the work of the church. He was elected assessor of Maroa township last spring.
Mr. Austin and Miss Belle Matthews of Boody were married Feb. 24, 1879. He is survived by his wife and two children, George A. Austin of Maroa and Floyd R. Austin of Boody. He also leaves a brother Louis Austin of Salem and three half-brothers, James Austin of Mulberry Grove, Samuel Austin of Chicago and Wallace Austin of Alberta, Canada.
The body was removed to the Monson undertaking establishment and prepared for burial. The funeral will be held at 2 oclock Thursday afternoon at the Presbyterian church in Maroa. The burial will be in Brown cemetery.
