She married at Otway, Carteret Co., NC, May 26, 1910, Macajah Adams, #30619638 (1877-1952), son of Mary Ann Willis and Elijah Cooper Adams.
She received her education at Atlantic High School and at the Graham Academy, Marshallburg, NC.
She received her teaching certificate May 16, 1902, at age 21. She taught school at Diamond City on Shackleford Banks, Otway, and Salter Path, all in Carteret Co., NC.
Prior to teaching, she had worked as assistant postmaster at Otway, where her father was postmaster. She also assisted her father in setting up a post office in 1903 at a community on North River which was named Bettie in appreciation for her assistance. The name of the town Salter Path was changed to Gillikin in honor of Miss Bettie Gillikin when the post office opened September 13, 1915. In 1918 when Miss Bettie and Macajah moved to Morehead City, the name was changed back to Salter Path.
They lived first on Bogue Banks and moved in 1918 or 1919 to 1311 Shackleford St., Morehead City, NC.
They had six children:
