Brigadier General Ross Holland Routh graduated from Hardin Simmons University in 1929. He joined the Oklahoma National Guard in August 1930 and retired in June 1966. Commissioned as a second lieutenant (infantry) in February 1932, he continued to rise in rank until being promoted to brigadier general in April, 1965.
When the National Guard was federalized in September 1940, Gen. Routh served as finance officer of the 45th Infantry Division during WWII in North Africa, Sicily, France, and Germany. During the Korean War, he was the finance officer of the Eighth US Army. After Korea, he served for many years as the US property and fiscal officer for the state of Oklahoma before his final state position as assistant adjutant general of Oklahoma.
In 1943, as a lieutenant colonel and the finance officer of the 45th Infantry Division during the amphibious landing in Sicily, the division had a newsworthy experience. To quote from an article in the 45th Division News, November 27, 1943: "... in the Sicilian landing, the money got wet and finance men stood guard over about a million dollars in once crisp, American bills which they raked like leaves into the sun atop a roof at Vittoria." After the money was dried out, the Finance Section was indeed able to pay the troops on time.
In retirement, Gen. Routh was highly dedicated to his family, taking great pride in the various achievements of his four sons, and publishing five books of genealogy concerning the Routh and Wroe families in America. He died in 1987 at the age of 81. His wife, Fay (Campbell) Routh, also a graduate of Hardin Simmons University class of 1931, followed him in death in 2001.
