Newton married in Kentucky to Susan Culp on 27 November 1862, the daughter of Peter and Martha "Patsy" Bailey Culp. They were the parents of six children: George N.; Lavina Patricia (married __Williams); Martha J.; John ; Charles W.; and Ida B, all born in Missouri.

Newton was a Civil War Veteran.

After Susan's death in 1882, Newton & children moved to Oklahoma. About 1908, Newton married Ophelia A.___. In the 1910 US Census, he had an adopted daughter, Ethel P. Lyons living with him and his wife.
