Accidentally Drowned
The 18 year old son of Andrew Dahl of Diamond Lake township was drowned Sunday afternoon about a mile this side of Verdi station. The railroad at this place emerges from the hole in the mountain to the level of prairie and in maaking a sharp bend a small ravine was crossed, which necessitating a fill of 10 to 15 feet. A small pond was the result, as no culvert or tiles had evern been put in, the pond being but a few rods across. The young man had constructed a raft of railroad ties and was out on it in the pond and in some manner managed to fall off. The water was about eight feet deep at that point, and as the young man could not swim, he immediately sank. Several boys were on the shore, but as they were comparatively small and unable to swim very much, they had to wait for the raft to float ashore before they could go to his rescue, and of course he had gone down for the last time before help arrived.
The funeral occured from the Danish Church in Diamond Lake Monday. A very large gathering of people assembled to testify to them regard for the young man and their sympathy for his parents. The young man had a $500 accident insurance policy.
