Andrew Nissen Dahl was born in Vonsild Mark, Denmark on July 22nd, 1848. While still a small boy his father died, later he received a step-father. He attended school in Vonsild, but was confirmed in Kolding. After his confirmation he worked on farms near his home. He served as a soldier at Odense. While in the service he suffered a broken leg and lay for a long time in a hospital. He came to America in March, 1873 after having a strong desire to come to America, settling in Oxford, New Jersey. He worked for a while in an Iron mine in New Jersey.
On August 23rd, 1873 he was united in marriage to Miss Dorthea M. Rhode at Oxford, New Jersey. Here they made their home for thirteen years, coming to Lake Benton and bought 80 acres in Diamond Lake in the spring of 1886, where they established the new home taking up the tasks of the early-day pioneer in changing the virgin prairie into the fine community which it is today.
Finally, Mr. Dahl obtained work on a large farm at Verdi and he and his family moved to Verdi to live. He worked for a while for the railroad at $1.10 a day. He finally managed to save enough to buy a pair of oxen, and old wagon and a plow. He bought a little lumber and built a barn and a little hut on his land in Diamond lake. Nis, the oldest son of the Dahl's helped his parents on the farm and also worked on the railroad. However, tragedy came to the Dahl family. While Nis was out swimming with some other boys, he drowned at the age of 18 years, in 1894.
A great deal could be told about the Dahl family. They were good farmers. As the sons grew up the purchased more land, and it was found the Dahl families owned 1200 acres. One son, Andrew, was a soldier in World War I and his helath was impaired by being gassed during the war. He regained his health and moved to the home place and Mr. and Mrs. Andres Dahl moved to Lak Benton in the fall of 1920.
The Dahl's were faithful members of the Diamond Lake congregation during their long life together. Shortly after celebrating their golden wedding anniversary in 1923, Mrs. Dahl was taken ill and passed away February 5th of 1924. After her death, Mr. Dahl moved in with his two sons, John and Fred.
At the time of his death September 8 1931, his survivors were three daughters, Mrs. Ferdinand Fehrman of Lake Benton, Mrs. Charles Tyler, Minneapolis, and Mrs Harry Bridenstine of Iowa; four sons, Chris, Andrew Jr., Jens and Fred Dahl all of the Lake Benton Community. One son, Christian Dahl has since passed away.
