‘J.D.' Rodgers

Funeral services are 2 p.m. Thursday for longtime Cushing area resident Jesse D. "J.D." Rodgers. He died Sept. 28, 2008. He was 83.
Services under the direction of Palmer Marler Funeral Home will be in Church of the Firstborn in Cushing. Ollie Bosch and Wayne Tibbett will officiate. Burial will be in Parkland Cemetery.
J.D. was born Feb. 5, 1925 in Ripley to the late Marshall R. and Dolly Grace Pruitt Rodgers. Hew grew up in Ripley and attended Independence School.
He served his country in the U.S. Navy during World War II.
J.D. was a member of the Church of the Firstborn and was baptized into the general assembly and Church of the Firstborn on Dec. 2, 1941.
On Feb. 14, 1943, he was united in marriage to Deloris Herrmann in the Parkland home of Bob Tibbett.
Many will remember J.D. as being a dedicated fisherman who would fish from sunup to sundown. He worked a number of years as a peanut farmer and a dairy farmer for a number of years. J.D. spent his life laying brick and rock for many in the community. He loved to play music and sing with his children; they sang at many funerals in the community.
J.D. is survived by his two daughters, Evangelin Hamilton and her husband Ernest of Cushing and Sharon Neal and her husband Virgil of Henryetta; two sons, Don Rodgers and his wife Louise of Agra and Dorman Rodgers and his wife Bonnie of Agra; one brother, Harold Rodgers and his wife Nina of Cushing; one sister, Emma Lee Smith and her husband Addrin of Visalia, Calif.; 17 grandchildren; 44 great-grandchildren; three great-great-grandchildren; numerous nieces and nephews; and other relatives and friends.
J.D. was preceded in death by his wife Deloris; his parents; a brother, Richard Rodgers; a sister, Faye Sarli; and 15 half brothers and half sisters.
Funeral music will be provided by J.E. and Vickie Sweet, Benny Porter and Bobby Jasper. Casket bearers will be Bruce Upchurch, Lesley Rodgers, Brian Neal, Grady Rodgers, Lt. Cmdr. Brent Rodgers and Marshall Rodgers. Wesley Earnest, Gary Whetstone and Brandon Rhodes will be honorary casket bearers.
