Lois E. Higgs, 94, of Princeville died at 2:35 p.m. Saturday, March 27, 2004, at Heartland Health Care Center in Canton, where she had been a patient for the past two weeks. Born April 15, 1909, in Monica to Ernest and Mabel Leaverton LaMay, she married Paul D. Higgs on June 21, 1933, [at White's Grove] near Monica. He survives. Also surviving are two sons, Donald (and Margie) of Rochelle and Richard (and Kathy) of Las Cruces, N.M.; one daughter, Marilyn (and Brian) Telander of Cuba; nine grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by one brother and one great-granddaughter.

A graduate of Normal Teacher's College in Normal, she first taught at Trivoli Grade School. She then taught at Edelstein Grade School, where she later became principal. She was a first grade teacher at Laura Grade School, retiring in 1972.

She received the WPEO Senior Citizen Award in 1991 in recognition of her outstanding public service to central Illinois.

She was a member of the Princeville Women's Club and a former member of the Peoria County Home Extension.

She was a former member of Garden Grove Chapter, Order of Eastern Star.

She was a member of First Presbyterian Church, where she served as Sunday school superintendent and president of its Women's Missionary Society.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday at her church. The Rev. Harry Losey will officiate. Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. today at Hammitt-Hott Funeral Home. Burial will be in Princeville Cemetery.

Memorials may be made to her church.
