Last Rites Are Held Friday For Ernest LaMay Of Monica
Funeral services for Ernest LaMay, who passed away May 16, were held in the White's Grove church with Rev. L. C. Meller of Chillicothe officiating. Pallbearers were W. R. Cordis, William Camp, Dave Smith, Harry Belford, Leo Schelkopf and William Camp. Interment was in the Princeville cemetery.
Ernest LaMay, son of David and Mary LaMay, was born near Monica, May 25, 1881 and spent his entire life in that vicinity. He died at his home in Monica May 16.
He received his grade schooling in county schools and was graduated from Western Normal and Commercial college in Shenandoah, Ia., in 1905.
January 16, 1906 he was united in marriage to Mabel Leaverton and engaged in the occupation of farming until 1931, when he became manager of the Monica Elevator Company, which position he still held at the time of his death.
He is survived by his wife; a daughter, Lois Higgs; and a son, Lloyd; four grandchildren, Donald, Marilyn and Richard Higgs and Sharlene LaMay; four sisters, Mrs. Edna Wollam of Seattle, Wash., Mrs. Edith Senn of Adrian, Mich., Mrs. Tens White of Burlington, Ia., and Mrs. Nellie Smith of Pueblo Colo.
Preceding him in death were his parent and two brothers, Bert and Frank.
Mr. LaMay was a man who took a deep interest in everything that was for the uplifting of mankind and was especially interested in young people. For 50 years he was an active member of the White's Grove church, serving most of those years as Sunday superintendent and as a teacher. He was honored by having been elected a life time deacon of the church, and at the time of his death was chairman of the board of deacons, Sunday school superintendent and teacher of the adult class.
He was chosen as president of the first board of directors of Princeville Community high school when it was organized and was also one of the first Farm Bureau members in Peoria county and for several years was a director from Princeville township.
As the health failed he was forced to resign from the offices he held in other organization, except the church, which he continued to serve so faithfully.
As a friend so beautifully expressed a tribute to his life,--"I feel that Mr. LaMay's passing brings deep sorrow, not only to his own family, but to the whole community, for he was a man of high ideals, of sterling character, a good Christian, kindly, efficient and held in the high esteem by all who knew him and his passing will be deeply deplored by all".

Jones and Hazel Cobb of Peoria; Mr. and Mrs. Ernest Morby of Elmwood; Mrs. Mabel Grierson, Miss Esther Armstrong and Richard Squire of Champaign, Mr. and Mrs. Wilbur Mendell of Morton and a number of friends from Peoria and surrounding towns.
