John Sandberg, age 84, of Barrett, passed away at his home on September 19, 2008.

Funeral services for John Sandberg will be held on Saturday, September 27, at 11:30 a.m. at the Peace Lutheran Church in Barrett, with Pastors Cordell and Mary Carol Strug officiating. Burial will be in the Peace Lutheran Cemetery, Barrett. Friends may call from 4:00 to 7:00 p.m. Friday, September 26, 2008 at Peace Lutheran Church and for one hour prior to services at the church.

John Sandberg was born on January 18, 1924, in Barrett, Minnesota, to the Rev. Ivar K. and Marion (Berrum) Sandberg. He was baptized and confirmed at Our Savior's Lutheran Church in Barrett. John attended school in Barrett, graduating in 1942. He played basketball and baseball and attended Bemidji State College on a basketball scholarship. After one quarter, John enlisted in the U.S. Naval Service on December 14, 1942, and joined the Merchant Marines during World War II. He was discharged on December 6, 1946.

On June 21, 1946, John was united in marriage by his father, Rev. Ivar Sandberg, to Marvel Sandberg at Our Savior's Lutheran Church in Barrett. They lived their entire married life in Barrett, where John was proprietor of the Barrett Hardware Company; he sold hardware and also did plumbing and heating.

John was very active in the community, serving on the city council and as a member of the Barrett Fire Department and the Barrett American Legion Unit. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, and playing on the Barrett baseball team. One of his favorite pastimes was visiting with friends; John loved people.

John is survived by his wife, Marvel of Barrett; daughters, Claire (Bob) McGillic of Big Lake, MN, and Elizabeth (Devin) Rusch of Brandon; brother, Paul (Norma) Sandberg of Hoffman; grandchildren, John Henry (Laura) Sandberg of Marshville, NC, Matthew (Kiara) Sandberg of Matthews, NC, Patrick McGillic and fiancé Sara of Eden Prairie, MN, Ben (Angie) Rusch of Carlos, MN, and Sarah Rusch of Plano, TX; several great-great-grandchildren; and sister-in-law, Charlotte Sandberg of Alexandria.

He was preceded in death by his parents, son, Timothy John Sandberg, brother, Gerhard; and sisters, Dort Riggins and Anne DeClerq.

Arrangements are with the Erickson-Smith Funeral Home in Elbow Lake.
