James Henderson Benefield, Sr. graduated from Jefferson High School, Jefferson, Marion Co., TX. as Valedictorian of his class; he worked his way through 2 years of law school at the University of Texas, Austin, Texas where he graduated. He was licensed June 16, 1903. He practiced in 1907 in Jefferson, TX. with W. T. Armistead and later with J. M. Singleton and maintained his own office on Lafayette Street at the time of his death. He specialized in oil and gas investments. He was a member of Phi Gamma Delta, Order of the Owls, Woodman of the World; a life time member of the Rotary Club, legal advisor of the Marion Co., TX. Draft Board in World War I; a member of the Marion Co., TX. Bar Association and charter member and the first president of the North East Texas Bar Association, a member of the Texas Bar Association and American Bar Association. He was an active member of the First Presbyterian Church in Jefferson, Marion Co., TX. J. H. and Justa Glass Benefield were married 63 yrs.
His brother was the famous author, John Barry Benefield (Died in 1971).
Buried on September 3, 1973.
Died in Marion County Hospital.
