Deaths Casts Shadow
Many families in the Ruskin community were saddened during the holiday season by the deaths of relatives and friends. Most recent are the deaths of Harold B. Johnson, Davenport and Mrs. Jonce Magee of Engelwood, Colorado.
Mrs. Magee (Grace Thayer), 87, died at her home December 31. She had lived in the Ruskin community until 1943 moving to Colorado in the 1930's. Survivors, besides her children and their families, include several sisters-in-law: Mrs. Katherine Jasperson and Mrs. Tony Henriksen of Nelson, Mrs. Esther Garlick of Colorado Springs, Colorado, and Mrs. Floyd Magee of Omaha. Funeral services were held in Nelson, Nebraska, and burial in Spring Creek Cemetery at Ruskin on January 5.

Grace Thayer Magee was born of pioneer parents, Bion L. and Estella Thayer, in 1891 on the farm north and west of Ruskin.
Recently she told of the account of the day she was born, as it was told to her. In an early spring snow storm April 10, her father walked through knee deep snow to the George Garlick farm a mile east. Mrs. Garlick followed him back in his tracks to help in delivering the baby.
She graduated from Ruskin High School in 1909, and worked for a while as a switch board operator at the Nelson Telephone Office.
She was married to Jonce Magee at the Ruskin Church of Christ in 1912, with Ray Bixler officiating. To this union was born seven children. She and her husband lived on a farm, a mile from her birthplace for 22 years, after which they moved to Denver during the dust bowl era, 44 years ago.
Mrs. Magee lived in Englewood, Colo., for 32 years.
Her husband died in 1949. She has maintained her own home since his death, where countless numbers of strangers, friends and relatives have enjoyed her hospitality. There she died unexpectedly of a heart attack Dec, 31.
Her brothers, Lovewell 0., Melvin L., and J. Earl Thayer, preceded her in death.
She was the youngest and had no sisters.
Mrs. Magee enjoyed a multitude of friends during her life time.
Those surviving are her six children, Mrs. Homer Ward (Maxine) of Englewood, Colo., Mrs. LaVerne Adamson (Ruth) of Cashmere, Wash., Mrs. William Northrup (Joyce) of Englewood, Colo., Garth T. Magee of Littleton, Colo., Neil W. Magee of Seattle, Wash., and Mrs. Ed Webber (Marilyn) of Albany, N.Y.; 28 grandchildren; 62 great-grandchildren; three great-great-grandchildren; many nieces and nephews; and many other relatives.
A son, James Curtis Magee, died in infancy.
Services were Jan. 5 at 2 p.m., from the Church of Christ in Nelson and burial was in the Spring Creek Cemetery, Ruskin.
The Klawitter Funeral Home of Nelson was in charge of arrangements.
