Fern Augusta (Mount) Allen, 92, Ellettsville, died Sunday in Ellettsville.
Born Oct. 10, 1904, in St. Louis Crossing, she was the daughter of Walter Mount and Alta (James) Mount. On Sept. 27, 1926, she married Leo Allen, who preceded her in death on June 25, 1963.
Mrs. Allen graduated from Clifford High School in 1922, and from Madame Blaker's Indiana Teachers College in 1924. She taught during the 1924-1925 school year, and quit teaching when she met my grandfather. Grandpa had asked her to marry him, and she had to quit teaching when she was married. This was because it wasn't allowed for a female teacher to be married and teach simultaneously.
She attended the St. Louis Crossing Missionary Baptist Church.
Survivors include two daughters, Mrs. James (Carmen) Gerbino, and Mrs. Phillip (Patricia June) Polston, Shelbyville; four grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.
