Teresa M. Banks was born to William "Willis" and Rebecca Emaline (Thomas) Banks in Illinois (probably Adams County.) Her parents were originally from Kentucky, but in 1850 are found in Adams County Illinois and by 1860 are at Fort Scott in McGee Co., Kansas.

In March of 1854, While she and her parents were still living in Quincy, Illinois, Teresa married John Kinder Smith, son of Jacob E. Smith. Teresa's husband was also born in Illinois, probably Adams County. His father and mother were born in Kentucky and Scotland, respectively.

All of Teresa and John Smith's children were born in Sonoma County, California. There were 8 children, beginning with Edith M., born August of 1856, and ending with Robert E., born in 1877.

In the 1880 census, John is missing from the household. His wife, chilren and father-in-law are living together in Santa Rosa. We suspect this reflects a possible marital separation because in the 1900 census husband and wife are still living separately, but reporting they are married.

We believe that John Kinder Smith died between 1900 and 1910. Teresa reports that she is widowed in the 1910 and 1920 census, but this is not definitive proof that her husband has actually died. Many times a woman would claim to be widowed when in actuality she was divorced or separated, but we can cautiously assert that he was deceased during the aforementioned time frame.

At least two of Teresa's siblings settled in California. Mary Ann (Banks) Cox lived in Bakersfield, Kern County, CA. Her sister, Joanna E. (Banks) Fry, also lived in Kern County. Her brother, Henry F. Banks, lived in Kern County from at least 1880 until at least 1930, where he appears in the census records. Their father died in 1881 in Bakersfield. We believe that Teresa's relatives were buried at Union Cemetery, but more research is required.

Teresa and John Kinder Smith have many descendants in California and Oregon.
