Mary Ellen Smith was born in Bodega Twp., Sonoma County, California to John Kinder Smith, a saw miller and farmer from Illinois and his wife Theresa M. (Banks) Smith, also an Illinois native and descendant of the illustrious Banks family, originally of England.

All of Mary's siblings were born in Sonoma County, California.

In 1880-1881, Mary Ellen married Edward Power Colgan, Jr. who had been born in Santa Rosa in 1856 to California pioneer Edward Power Colgan, Sr., who had arrived in San Francisco from New York in 1849 and became a long-time resident of Santa Rosa and proprietor of the well known Santa Rosa House Hotel.

In 1880, Mary's husband was working as a blacksmith, but by 1900 he was State Controller of California.

Mary Ellen and Edward Power Colgan had 5 children:

Edward Power Colgan, III, b. 28 July, 1885
Edna May Colgan, b. Aug 1887
Evelyn Colgan, b. Oct 1889
Ralph Waite Colgan, b. Mar 1893
Helen B. Colgan, b. May 1899

Edward died at age 49 in November of 1905. Mary Ellen outlived him by another 31 years. It does not appear that she married again.
