Born in Claygate, Thames Ditton, Surrey, England, the son of Henry and Annie Bristow Clayson. His family came to Montreal in 1907, his father answering the call for skilled labourers by the Grand Trunk Railroad. He joined the Royal Air Corps in May of 1918, but the war ended before he saw any conflict, being awarded the rank of Second Lieutenant in January 1920. He married Ellen Marion Early in 1926 at St. Cyprian's Anglican Church in Montreal with whom he had two children. He worked for the Canadian Pacific Railroad for 30 years until his retirement in 1963.

He loved the outdoors, fishing as a boy off Nun's Island in Montreal and taking long walks through the hydro and woods and fields behind his home in Niagara Falls. When he walked along the railroad tracks with the dogs, the train engineers would wave and greet him like an old friend. He made his own wine and was an avid birdwatcher and was affectionately known as "Pappy".

Dearly beloved husband, father and grandfather.
